Sponsored Bike Ride ‘In the Steps of the Eleven’
 
The Iron Memorial Fund aims to erect a memorial to commemorate the eleven British soldiers and the French citizen executed by the Germans in Guise, on 25th February 1915.  The site of the memorial is to be in the village of Iron, Aisne, where the soldiers were concealed from the Germans for about 5 months until their discovery and execution.  Theirs is a story full of daring, intrigue and tragedy.  Briefly, in the first few weeks of the WW1 campaign, the soldiers became separated from their regiments in the retreat from Mons and became trapped behind enemy lines.  They lived rough in the forests until they were bravely taken in by the villagers of Iron. They were kept hidden in the village before being betrayed to the Germans.

The soldiers and one of their principal carers were executed by firing squad in the Chateau at Guise.  We believe that one of the soldiers was only 17 year old.  Other villagers were imprisoned and had their homes and businesses burned.  Some died as a result of their deprivations.  In all the tragedy claimed the lives of 16 people.  We are working with the village of Iron to erect a small memorial to the victims of this tragedy, to the other soldiers who refused to surrender and to the brave French and Belgians who helped them. 

Our sponsored bike ride retraces the route taken by the soldiers from their disembarkment at Le Havre to Guise Chateau where they met their deaths.  Please help us commemorate this incredible story and perpetuate the memory of these brave people.
 
The inauguration for the monument is planned for Saturday September 17 2011.

Randonnée à vélo  ‘Sur les Pas des Onze’

Le Iron Memorial Fund espère ériger un mémorial pour commémorer les onze soldats britanniques et le citoyen français exécuté par les allemands à Guise, le 25 février 1915. Le site du mémorial doit être dans le village de Iron, Aisne, où les soldats ont été dissimulés des allemands pendant environ 5 mois jusqu'à leur découverte et exécution.

Leur histoire est pleine d'audace, d'intrigue et de tragédie.

Brièvement, dans les premières semaines de la campagne de WW1, les soldats ont été séparés de leurs régiments dans la retraite de Mons et sont devenus pris au piège derrière les lignes ennemies. Ils ont vécu à la dure dans les forêts jusqu'à ce qu'ils aient été bravement accueillis par les villageois de Iron. Ils ont été gardés cachés dans le village avant d'être trahis aux allemands.

Les soldats ont été exécutés par le peloton d'exécution au Château de Guise. Nous pensons qu'un des soldats avait seulement 17 ans.

D'autres villageois ont été emprisonnés et leurs maisons et affaires brûlées. Certains sont morts suite à leurs privations. Cette tragédie aura coûtée la vie à 16 personnes.

Nous travaillons avec le village de Iron pour ériger un petit mémorial aux victimes de cette tragédie, aux autres soldats qui ont refusé de se rendre et au français courageux et aux Belges qui les ont aidés. 
Notre randonnée à vélo reconstitue le parcours pris par les soldats de leur débarquement au Havre jusqu'au Château de Guise où ils sont morts.
